I imagine the five yonis in a hot tub getting know each other. Some of us have monogamous partners, some of us are straight, but I’m so enjoying being in this steamy soup of women — our bodies all shades of brown, our breasts of many sizes bobbing just at the water line.
It’s not just the gorgeousness of naked brown women, though that helps. I feel so satisfied to be here at the start of something incredible. By the energized charge in the air, the buzz of our conversation, I can tell I’m not the only one delighting in the company. Desi women claiming our own sexuality, daring to speak about our deepest desires, exploring our long lineage of joy, power, sublimation and self-expression …
Champagne pops. We toast: “To the yonis!” Cold bubbly sparkles down my throat as my muscles start to melt into the hot water.
We talk about our lives, our writing careers, and then of course the conversation turns to sex.
“Truth or Dare!” someone suggests.
Being writers, we mostly stick to truth at first. As the small confessions emerge — “Anal is my favorite, totally!” “One time I actually farted in someone’s face!” — we laugh with shock and recognition at each other’s bawdy revelations. “Me too!” emerges again and again, along with our difference and diversity.
And slowly, what my friend Leah Lakshmi calls “the lust of recognition” begins to overtake us. The air gets thicker, our voices deeper, our bodies softer.
And we begin to take dares.
“Choose someone to kiss.”
“Stroke her breast.”
“Masturbate for us, two minutes, starting…”
Now the real fun begins.
